Back-illuminated camera

Back-illuminated camera
Nowadays, more and more mobile phone manufacturers are launching most of their phones with stacked sensors, and with better performance, stacked sensors will become the mainstream of mobile phone cameras in the future. So what is the difference between back-illuminated camera and stacked camera?Let's learn more about it.

What is a stacked camera

Stacked sensors are developed from back-illuminated sensors, which swap the position of the photodiode in the light-sensitive layer, while stacked sensors swap the position of the signal loop. The stacked sensor is smaller than the back-illuminated sensor, and the image quality has been optimized.
In addition, the stacked sensor has two technologies to improve the image quality compared to the back-illuminated sensor. The first is the stacked sensor with RGBW coding technology, which is the original R (red), G (green), B (blue) three primary color pixels and then add W (white) pixels to improve the image quality, improve the sensor's light sensitivity, so that the camera can take higher quality photos in dark environments. It is believed that in the near future, with the development of digital, the stacked camera will become the mainstream camera in many smartphones.

What is a back-illuminated camera

Stacked sensor is a latest mobile phone camera sensor introduced by Sony, the English name is StackedCMOS, using a stacked structure. In fact, both back-illuminated and stacked sensors are introduced by Sony, the former is branded as ExmorR while the latter is ExmorRS, so it follows that the stacked sensor is a new upgraded version of the back-illuminated one.
The new upgraded stacked sensor is the signal processing circuit in the original sensor is placed on the original substrate and overlapped on the sensor chip to form the pixel part of the back-illuminated sensor, thus enabling the formation of a large number of pixel dots on a smaller sensor chip size, allowing more pixels to be placed in the freed up space. In addition, the pixel dots and the circuitry in the sensor are separate, so the pixel dots can be optimized for higher image quality and the circuitry can be optimized for high performance.Currently, most domestic and international mobile phone manufacturers have adopted stacked sensors for their flagship smartphone cameras.
